Turducken
Turducken. Apparently, I’m one of the few Americans unaware as to what the hell Turducken is (check the Wikipedia.org definition for more variants).

I showed the above picture to Jess (Justine’s Sister), to which she replied, “That’s foul!”

I took the liberty of editing her syntax for comedic effect. Puns are my specialty.

So I’m working on a problem: I need to select data in a query that might include multiple databases. Sure, there’s the whole database_name . table_name . column_name syntax, but what about selecting the second database based on the data within a column of your query itself? You might want to look at the PDF to see what I’m going on about.

Mybrarian vs MagStand

I’ve learned (at least the way my luck goes) that as soon as I open my mouth about an idea, that idea materializes elsewhere, much to my loss.

So, you’d think I would have learned to keep my mouth shut about projects, ideas, or revolutionary Web applications, right? Guess again. At least this time, I’m being very careful about where, when and to who I mention an idea.

The idea in this case is “Mybrarian” or “MagStand,” a new project I’m tinkering with. This project has zero development and is currently just an idea floating about in my head (somthing to solve a problem I have with my memory). Perhaps the idea is a flop, perhaps it’s the next George Foreman grill. Who knows? I certainly don’t and I won’t until I figure out a) is there a market for such a product; b) what’s the development and deployment cost vs the return; c) what effort does it take on my part to launch and can I pass the idea to another team of developers; d) when am I ever going to get sleep?

For now, I’m keeping my ideas under wraps for a couple reasons: a) I simply don’t have time to take on other projects; b) undertaking another project would not be fair or ethical while I’m working for others; c) I’m just not going to tell you C.

So, why did I decide to even hint about Mybrarian/MagStand? Because if I don’t at least get a post on my blog with the names and the hints, then I’ll never have control over when and where the idea was spawned/photocopied. For now, just sit in wonder. Read your magazines and we’ll talk later.

PS: the logos above were just some Web 2.0 mockups I did because Justine is no fan of that style. I love you, hon.

Child's Play Charity

We’re only a week away from Christmas, and the Penny-Arcade built Child’s Play Charity could still use your help. Simply browse their Web site, pick a hospital or organization to donate a toy (via the Amazon.com wish list system) and make a huge difference in some child’s life.

This year, Child’s Play has extended their reach to include Children’s hospitals in Louisiana (Tulane). The boys and girls in New Orleans, while nothing in their life could be considered normal (still!), would be overjoyed in being remembered this Christmas. If the gift of a toy will make a difference in getting their lives back to some resemblance of normality, then please do all you can.
