Just thought I’d quickly let you know that it’s snowing in downtown Seattle right now. It’s not sticking, but it is coming down heavily and in big, beautiful flakes.

I’m glad for the snow today, as Justine and I don’t have to go out in it - tomorrow my attitude will change as I have to be up and out of the house early for SQL Server training at NetDesk.

OK, so the “clearly” word was a pun. I’m referring to the clear attribute in CSS.
I’m having a problem with the Desolation Clothing Web site I’m working on (r3): I have a contact form at the bottom of a page, contained within a div. The section I’m working on however expands over the footer in Firefox, renders fine in IE (other than some unrelated layout issues in IE), and even better in Opera.
What I don’t seem to understand is teh damn overlay. I have a clear div at the bottom of the section in order to force some more whitespace, but I don’t think I’m using it right.

Desolation Clothing's Firefox div problem
Firefox (Firefox 2, Ubuntu 6.10) rendering the form overlaying the footer element (escaping out of the div)
Desolation Clothing's IE success
IE (IE 6, using Wine on Ubuntu 6.10) rendering the overlay just fine.

Both use the following tree:

div (the container of the page)
div (the container of the right-hand column)
p (the paragraph tag that handles special blocks in the right-hand side)
form (the form)
table (the table that holds the form fields)
(the form fields)
/table
/form
/p
div (a class='clear' div)
/div
/div
/div

Any takers?

I’m not sure where I heard it, maybe it was my friend Mahmood from Elbasha Cafe, or maybe it was from a movie - I can’t tell anymore; regardless, a wiser man than I shared the following story with me recently: A man, living by a river, heard in town that a large storm was coming and the river would flood. The man said to himself, “I am a man of God, the Lord will keep me safe.”
Soon, the storm came, and the river started to flood. Over the radio, the man heard a news announcement, “the river is flooding; it’s recommended that everyone evacuate.” Again, the man repeated “I am a man of God, the Lord will keep me safe.”
As the river flooded more, another man floated by in a boat, shouting to our man of God, “the river is flooding! Climb aboard my boat and I’ll take you to safety.” The man of God refused, repeating “I am a man of God, the Lord will keep me safe.”
The river continued to flood, forcing the man to his roof to keep dry. Soon, a helicopter rescue flew overhead, with shouts from the helicopter: “Hey! You down there, grab this rope and we’ll pull you to safety. The river is flooding!” Again, the man replied, “I am a man of God, the Lord will keep me safe.”
Shortly thereafter, the man drown. Once he died, he found himself at the gates of heaven, face to face with God. The man, confused, said to God “I am a man of God, why didn’t you send me a message?”
God replied, “send you a message? Didn’t you get all the messages I sent? First I warned you the river would flood by the townspeople, then the radio, then I sent two rescues to save you. What more of a message could I have sent?”

I’ve been faced with a lot of tragedy in my family lately; my grandfather has deteriorated to the point where he may be allowed to pass away. My birth father, someone that I’ve had a very strained relationship with my whole life has returned, also near his death-bed. For someone who is trying so hard to find faith, what more of a message must God send?

Update: I just thought I’d throw this photo in. Can you see the resemblance? I’m glad we had some time to try and catch up, some time to give me a view into another part of my genetics and family history. A chance to both admit that while our past might not be perfect - and we’ll never be able to change that - we can at least share apologies.

Justine and I have been playing on craigslist.org today. We’ve found several homes we’re dying for, and three in particular have hit our sweet spot.

one of the homes we're looking at
I won’t give you the URL to two of them (I don’t want too many eyes on them as we’re looking - don’t need the competition). However, I will share this one with you as we’ll most likely not move that far away from downtown (having to take the Sounder to Seattle? No thanks). The house is brand new, 1800+ sq feet, and so much more. Drool to say the least.
